The Daily Meditator- April 2002

Welcome to the introductory edition of The Daily Meditator. It is our joy to share the life-transforming practice of meditation with you. Once Paramhansa Yogananda was asked if he had come to start a new religion, "No," he replied, "I came to convert people to their own inner experience." This is why he called his teachings the path of Self-realization. May you come to know your True Self through your practice of this holy science. Through the universal teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, and of his disciple, Swami Kriyananda, you will learn not only how to make your meditations more fulfilling, but also receive the guidance and inspiration to inspire your efforts.

There are three phases to meditation: relaxation, concentration, and expansion. In this month, we will talk about the first stage, relaxation. Tension, both physical and mental, is the biggest obstacle to meditation. To meditate effectively, it is necessary to relax deeply. Otherwise, our meditative efforts are like a balloon-wanting to soar-yet still tied to the earth. Swami Kriyananda wrote in The Art and Science of Raja Yoga, "Tension blocks the natural flow of energy in the body. It paralyzes one's normal sense of physical and mental harmony."

In this issue

  • Insightful Passages: there are several insightful passages on the importance of relaxation from Awaken to Superconsciousness, by Swami Kriyananda, and How to Meditate, by Jyotish Novak.
  • Relaxation Techniques: You also will find several techniques you can practice to become more relaxed and calm before you meditate. Try them; you will find that they will make a tremendous difference in your meditation practice.
  • Meditation Keys: Lastly, Swami Kriyananda offers Meditation Keys for those just starting to meditate. Long-time meditators will also find his suggestions extremely beneficial.

Please let us know if there is any way we at Ananda Sangha can be of service to you.

In divine friendship,

Bharat Cornell
