The Daily
Meditator - December 2002
Dear Meditator,
When Paramhansa
Yogananda came to the United States he started a tradition of leading
annual eight-hour Christmas meditations to honor Christ's birth.
For those attending, the time seemed to fly, because the meditations
were so deep. Often Yogananda would have visions of Jesus and Divine
Mother, and would share their words with those present. Swami Kriyananda,
present on several of these occasions, said it was thrilling to
hear Yogananda's voice during these conversations.
Yogananda once
wryly commented that Jesus doesn't need us to celebrate his birthday
because he already has Christ Consciousness, but we need
to, to remind ourselves that we, too, are sons and daughters of
God. Christmas is an especially auspicious time for communing with
the Inner Christ. As you meditate during this Holy Season, may your
heart be filled with the universal love of the Christ Consciousness.
As the New Year
approaches, it is very helpful for devotees to reflect on their
life and ask, " How much am I growing spiritually?"
Often, however, people use the wrong criteria to measure their efforts
and success. The search for God is very subtle; this is why every
spiritual tradition emphasizes the importance of having the guidance
of a wise and experienced teacher. In this month's feature article,
Signs of Spiritual Progress, Swami Kriyananda tells what
are the signs the devotee should look for. In addition, Swami points
out the major pitfalls on the path of meditation, and how the meditator
can avoid them. Also in this issue of The Daily Meditator
is Paramhansa Yogananda's encouraging and inspiring 1938 New Year's
message.
