The Daily Meditator - March 2003

Dear Meditator,

Why is keeping your spiritual energy high so important? Swami Kriyananda writes, "If our consciousness is strongly positive, our magnetism will be positive also, and will attract good things to us. It will, in addition, create a 'buffer zone' around us, protecting us from harm like an umbrella in the rain…"

Recently, we have received emails from many of you sharing the challenging situations you are facing. In this month's feature article, How to Strengthen and Protect Your Spiritual Magnetism, Swami Kriyananda offers techniques and suggestions that can help protect you from negative influences and keep your aura strong and positive. Whenever you experience or expect a difficult situation, these techniques can be invaluable.

Our second article, The Brain: Engineered for Divinity, written by Dr. Peter van Houten, Ananda minister and medical doctor, explains that medical science now believes the structure of our brain changes according to how we use it. He writes: "The brain is very responsive and will change if we point it in the right direction. If we choose to be violent, our brain will respond by changing in ways that make us more violent and coarse. On the other hand, if we choose a life of compassion and kindness, our brains will respond by helping us to manifest those qualities."

Sri Yukteswar, Paramhansa Yogananda's guru, said that the spiritual path is "first painful, then effortlessly liberating." When we begin on the path, we have to struggle against old inclinations and habits. Sometimes our minds want to do one thing, and our conscience another! This article points out that because of the plasticity of the brain, every meditation, every spiritual effort we make, slowly, but surely, restructures the brain in ways that will support our quest for divine realization.

Our third article is A Simple Technique for Overcoming Sleepiness During Meditation. Most of us have had to face this challenge and will welcome this technique!

In this issue:

If you get a chance, please share with us how you are doing with your meditation practice. I pray that you are able to find the time to meditate regularly and deeply.

Joy and blessings to you!
