Praying for World Peace and Planetary Healing
 Paramhansa Yogananda said that natural calamities, such as earthquakes and hurricanes, are the result of the excessive build-up of negative thoughts and emotions around the world. These negative vibrations can be neutralized by healing prayers and by more people holding positive thoughts. The Blessed Mother Mary has appeared numerous times in the past century, exhorting people to pray in order to mitigate the wars and calamities that would otherwise visit the earth due to the natural laws of karma.
There have been some interesting experiences as we prayed for specific geographic areas. Years ago, a man wrote to the Healing Prayer Ministry requesting prayers for his island off the coast of Washington State. The weather there tends to be very cold, wet and dreary, and it gets even worse in the winter. He said everyone was depressed and was getting “cabin fever”. At that time I had very little experience in this kind of prayer, but I put it on the prayer list, hoping for the best. About six months later the man visited Ananda Village and said, “Oh! Thank you for praying for my island! Soon after the prayers began someone hung a large photo of Paramhansa Yogananda in the general store, and everyone started doing better! The people who showed the most improvement were those who had previously established some connection with Paramhansa Yogananda through his writings.”
This showed me that, in the words of Yogananda, “healing depends on the power of the healer, and the receptivity of the patient.”
When we pray for the planet, we focus primarily on those who are serving God and the upliftment of humanity in some way. The souls who are trying to do good would be most receptive to the vibrations of healing.
As Paramhansa Yogananda taught, “If you are in a dark room, don’t beat at the darkness with a stick, but rather try to turn on the light!”
I once was leading a small group in a healing prayer for the planet. We had already spent some time in prayer for individuals in need of physical healing, and we were ending the evening with a general prayer for planetary healing. This was during the time of the war in Kosovo.
I must admit I only kept myself minimally aware of the details of the war, but I knew of the need for healing and prayer. I also knew that many people were being "ethnically cleansed,” or slaughtered. As I lead the prayer for various geographic areas of the globe, I asked the group to visualize our hands sending healing energy to that particular area.
As I visualized my hands sending energy over Serbia, I was very surprised to feel them get prickly and uncomfortable. I realized that the area was such a tinderbox of war that I had to be careful in how I sent prayer energy there! Healing power is energy and I didn't’t want to add fuel to the fire. I intuitively knew that the healing energy had to feel harmonious, even as it flowed through me to the area. It was extremely sensitive.
Sometimes we can simply send a powerful steam of positive healing energy to an area, or to a person, and it will be very healing. But if the person is resistant to healing, there will be a sense of friction, which will be felt by the healer and also the patient. In a tense war situation there is a mixture of “needs and wants”. Each side wants to win, but one side may be darker than the other.
I pulled back my energy from the prayer for a moment, and tried to feel which prayer was going to be helpful in that moment. I realized that I needed to pray for all those who were currently enduring that war, and especially for those who were bringing harmony to those around them.
I then began to feel a deep inspiration flowing through my hands in the healing prayer. As Paramhansa Yogananda says, “The instrument is blessed by what flows through it.” This principle can guide our prayers.
A few weeks later, someone put a small news article on my desk about an incident that happened around the time I had prayed for those in Serbia. A long line of people was assembled in front of a long grave. The firing squad was preparing to shoot them. At this moment, one of the condemned young men began to walk out of the line toward the commander.
The commander, with his rifle raised said, “Go back, or I will shoot!” This had little effect on the man. He kept walking forward, ignoring the protests of the enemy commander. Amazingly, he reached the end of the commander’s rifle, put his hand on it, and calmly pushed the point of the gun down until it was pointed at the ground. This was done wordlessly.
The commander then ordered his men to drop their weapons. Most amazingly, he said that they would march everyone to the nearby border, so they could join the refugee camp there. The soldiers, who had just been ready to shoot the line of people, joined them in crossing the border to become part of the refugee camp.
If that is not the grace of God, I don’t know what is!
One cannot say for certain that it was our prayers that assisted this divine event, but one can surely say God was present for all those people on that day. Perhaps their silent prayers helped direct our healing prayers that day. God’s grace can flow in merciful and miraculous ways. Thus, I am encouraged to continue praying for healing of the planet.
Our world has an ongoing need for healing prayers, whether it be for war, famine, or the environment. The details may change, but the need does not change until we begin to live in harmony with God and each other. The prayer below can be used in at any time, and you can focus it on any area of particular need.

Technique for Healing at a Distance
- Sit erect. Gently tense and relax the whole body. Calm yourself. Touch the medulla once, in order to make it easier for you to concentrate on it. Then visualize Cosmic Energy surrounding and entering the body through the medulla, then going to the point between the eyebrows, and into the spine.
- Feel the energy flowing down the length of your arms into the hands. Continue tensing and relaxing. Feel the life force flow from the medulla and the point between the eyebrows, through the spine to the hands.
- After tensing and relaxing, firmly rub the bare left arm with the palm of your right hand. Do the same to the right arm with the left palm.
- Relax. Visualize the Cosmic Energy descending from the medulla into your arms and hands. Now, with your eyes closed, rapidly rub your palms together about twenty times.
- Separate the hands and lift the arms upward. Feel the life current flowing from the medulla into the spine, through both arms and hands, with a pricking, tingling sensation.
- Visualize your patient.... Broadcast the healing force by moving your hands, electrified by the Cosmic Energy, up and down, willing the healing current to pass into your patient.
Do this in a quiet room for fifteen minutes, or until you feel that you have accomplished your task.

Feel Light and Divine Power flowing through you as you serve as an instrument of God’s healing grace.
Visualize the Earth floating between your hands. It may be helpful to think of the beautiful photos of it taken from outer space. See the aura of the Earth filled with harmony and light. Gently move your hands in space over the Earth, sending divine healing light of God to all areas.
See the physical aspect of the planet happy and healthy. Send healing light as you visualize clear waters in the oceans, lakes and streams. See divine light nourishing the green plants and trees of the earth. See life force flowing to all of the many creatures. See the earth's atmosphere fresh and sparkling with vitality.
Visualize light and love flowing through the many churches and spiritual groups. May the Light of God shine forth through all religions, harmonizing their efforts and guiding souls to Him. The true strength of America lies in its spiritual nature. May this spiritual nature be strengthened and clarified, and may God's light guide and protect this country.
Ask Divine Mother to bless all souls. Ask Her to to give special encouragement to the souls that strive to bring light to everyone around them. May these “angels” be ever blessed as they spread God’s grace to all.
